It’s been almost two years of quiet grief and hidden tears since the girl with the restless eyes went and broke my heart. The moon’s already high when she comes back home from work, she says she’s tired of trying, she often thinks of giving up. The dishes on the sink look like a scene from a cheap noir, she used to speak her mind with me, now she’s got herself a cat. Thirty-one’s too early for anyone to feel like that, she looks back at the good times like they will never return. Staring out the window like she once stared into the road, wishing it could get her out to where the brighter summers go. It’s a shame but she takes it in with the same damp air this city breathes. To buy some time, smoke some weed, go to bed and pray for sleep. The mirror says goodbye as she leaves late for her train, the wrinkles ‘round her eyes tell of nightmares and dead ends. Monday morning crowds resenting Friday evening drinks, no one looks her in the eye, they’re all walking in their sleep. El séptimo álbum de Yuri Méndez se titula W. W es una estupenda colección de canciones estupendas grabadas en la frontera entre el lujo y la ostentación. Consultado al respecto, el propio Yuri comenta: «será por dinero». W se presenta en los formatos habituales —notablemente mejorados— y consiste en una variedad de instrumentos carísimos que, combinados impecablemente con miles de palabras escogidas casi siempre por su pertinencia semántica, no puede sino satisfacer a los hombres y mujeres de hoy en día que prefieran la alegría al crossfit y la mantequilla genuina al coaching grupal.

Por otro lado, a todas luces el izquierdo, Yuri envejece notablemente bien y continua escribiendo música sin tregua con el fin de saturar el mercado y cumplir en vida el sueño que a tantos otros les ha sido negado incluso más allá de la muerte: descansar los lunes y montar una tiendecita de import-export bien posicionada en Tripadvisor.

Por último, es necesario señalar que sus discos anteriores han sido recibidos con tanto entusiasmo por la crítica que al menos dos se han ido a vivir con ella y dicen no arrepentirse de nada. Afortunadamente forman parte de suficientes películas y series de televisión de todo el mundo como para seguir a disposición del público en general y del connoisseur avezado en particular. «Si será por dinero», insiste Méndez.
Son buenos tiempos en la tierra de W. o, como dijo el poeta, «duele un poco, pero los colores son admirables».

Yuri Méndez’s 7th album is called W. W is a collection of finely crafted songs. The instruments are many and their intonations, variegated. W comes in the usual formats, only better, and full to the brim with sensitive lyrics for the man and woman of today.
On the other hand, presumably the left, Yuri’s ageing well and intent all the while on writing more numbers in order to keep a steady flow of fresh material ready at any time.

These are good times in W land or, as the poet said, ‘it hurts a bit, but the colours are admirable’.

Yuri Méndez is Pajaro Sunrise. Initially a duo, he’s been working on his lonesome ever since the release of the second album, 2008’s Done/Undone. Tons of praise have been dumped over his previous releases, as a matter of fact so many tons of praise that in the most critical cases (no pun intended), a shovel would be required to actually listen to the music. Thankfully, it’s been featured in enough movies and TV series all over the world to be still available both to the odd connoisseur and the public in general.
